Velmur abandon plans for South Witham - Press Release,, 17th June, 2010

VELMUR LIMITED

PROPOSED DAIRY UNIT
SOUTH WITHAM

The Directors of Velmur and their advisers have, following their meeting with the South Witham Parish Council and the open meeting, reflected on comments raised at the meeting and the reaction of the village.

The Company still believe that the case for more intensive dairying remains in the UK. The scheme in many ways could have met anticipated concerns of the village.

Velmur had from the outset agreed to consult and listen to the views of the village. Access, the site and measures for slurry disposal could have minimised the impact of the scheme. The proximity of the site to the village however would not be acceptable to the village in the circumstances.

The Directors have agreed that they will not be taking forward a planning application for this site.

PRESS RELEASE ENDS.

  1. Congrats on your "success" that farm was 100 jobs for people in this village. There is no true valid reason for you apposing such a thing other then the fact you all have far to much time on your hands, mostly pentioners that don't have to worry about work and paying there bills! I think this whole "site" is pathetic as is your action against a company that could of helped get many of the jobless bums off there backsides and into legitimate work!

you should really take a step back and think of the bigger NON SELFISH picture! i myself am employed, i don't have kids or teenagers but i know enough about this village to know that work here is VERY limited. why not put your energies into something worth while rather then getting up in arms over something that in all honesty doesn't effect your everyday village folk.

  2. Thanks for your comment Brett - each to their own opinion, and I'm happy to publish yours.

I'm not quite sure where you get 100 jobs from - Velmur were quoting less than that on a temporary basis to build the factory, with around 30 jobs after the build completed in one year. Those jobs, of course, would be offset, nationally, by the many more jobs that would have been lost throughout the wider farming community as a result of this kind of farming approach.

Clearly, you did not attend the public meeting, or you would have realised that those involved formed, firstly, a signficant portion of the village, and secondly, a broad cross section of the village. Of course, there were pensioners in attendance, but I'm not one of them.

I think you need to do some research into what factory farming involves in terms of public health risks, pollution, farming job losses, reduced food quality, not to mention animal welfare.

It is a free country and you are entitled to your opinion, but it's not a particularly common opinion in this village, I can assure you.

    Regards
    Jeff

  3. I am neither a vegetarian, nor an animal welfare activist; merely a mother on a budget (like most people). However, I'd rather budget even harder, than have any kind of job at the expense of this kind of intensive animal farming.

I realise that "small" does not necessarily equate to "good" and that there may be abuses at many levels of farming, but that is not justification for this. It crosses a line for me.

"Jobless" bums aren't on their backsides because there are no jobs, they are on their backsides because they are "bums" and no amount of available work will change that. Decent people don't inflict misery on people or animals simply to get work. It's only the "selfish" who do that.

Jeff ... enjoyed reading, glad it all worked out. Apologies for my comment being a little after the event (so to speak).

    Nicola.

  4. Thanks Nicola...let us hope that Nocton does not get the go ahead after the plans were resubmitted!

I agree entirely that jobless bums are indeed bums by choice and not because jobs don't exist...my opinion is that it's because they are paid too much to sit around on their backsides, but that's clearly a political viewpoint of mine.

    Cheers
    Jeff
